Posted Updated

BALD HEAD ISLAND — A memorial service for an officer killed in the line of duty has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Peacock-Newman Funeral Chapel in Southport.

Investigators say 33-year-old Officer Devina Jones was shot in the head Friday night while patrolling the area near Bald Head Island's lighthouse.

According to the Associated Press, Jones, who had lived in the Goldsboro area before moving to the Oak Island area in 1977, had called for backup. The officer arrived and found her dead in an open area near the lighthouse. Police would not elaborate on what Jones had reported.

Authorities reopened Bald Head Island Sunday afternoon after finishing its questioning and investigation for a suspect.

Police have made no arrests in the case and will not say if they have a suspect.

The Bald Head Island Village Council has issued a $50,000 reward offer for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
