Jordan Takes a Shot With His New Chapel Hill Restaurant

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — Michael Jordan's restaurant, 23, is now open in Chapel Hill.

People are already saying great things about the restaurant. All you have to do is put Michael Jordan's name or number on it, and people will come.

Some might expect to see a sports bar inside, but that is not what customers will find. The main dining area is formal-looking with some subtle basketball references.

The bar area has several televisions showing highlights from Jordan's career. The menu is described as contemporary, American cuisine.

The restaurant would not be complete without a retail shop, where customers and shoppers can buy 23 logo gear.

During the first week of business, 23 percent of the profit will be donated to the state's disaster relief fund.

The restaurant does not expect a shortage of customers, but customers may experience a shortage of parking spaces near 23.

23 is located along West Franklin Street, an area where parking is at a premium. In fact, a parking company tried to lease spaces in the city lot next to the restaurant for valet parking, but the request was turned down by the Chapel Hill Town Council.

Business owners in the area also protested, saying it took spaces away from their customers.

Peter Grills, director of operations at 23, says there are plenty of options for parking.

"The city lot which is right next door is still available for people so there is still local parking," he says.

Chapel Hill police say parking will be tough, and a new restaurant will make it a bit tougher.

Michael Jordan was not able to attend Thursday's opening.
