Apex Friends, Neighbors Establish 'Towne' for 'Kids'

However, they need more money, more donations and more volunteers to finish the job.

"It's a playground that's going to be built in five days with the help and effort of hopefully about 2,000 volunteers," said Donna Buckless, project coordinator.

They moved into brand new subdivisions and send their kids to brand new schools. What the friends and neighbors lacked was a park and playground that defines their brand new community spirit.

"The community understands how important this is, and I think they're going to get a good turnout. By week's end, this thing will be up," said volunteer Dan Crocker.

The final design of the wooden structure of towers, decks and slides is complex. Only a few understand how it goes together. The rest are only part of the assembly line.

"It's got the measurements and the instructions. We make it and take it over there and stick it between a pole," said one volunteer.

Many of the volunteers have kids who will play there.

"I have a 7-year-old. She'll enjoy this. I'll have her hanging from one of the beams," said one parent.

However, parenthood is not a requirement.

"I live in the community, and I work with children. I'm an occupational therapist at UNC, and I just love children, so I came up," said volunteer Jennifer Wade.

"I've had a lot of people call me up and say they wouldn't feel good about stepping on this playground had they not at least bought a brick or stake or given it an hour or two of their time," said Buckless.
