Hundreds Attend Memorial Service for Ft. Bragg Soldier Killed in Kuwait

Posted Updated

FORT BRAGG — More than 400 people came to pay their respects to Staff Sgt. Troy Westberg, 29, at a memorial service at JFK Memorial Chapel Monday.

Westberg, a soldier with the 3rd Special Forces Group, was one of six service members who died in a training accident in Kuwait last week. Thoughts and prayers were also extended to three other Special Forces soldiers from Fort Bragg that were injured. Two of them remain hospitalized.

Leaders and friends described Westberg as a soldier with unlimited potential; a man dedicated to serve his nation in combat and in peace.

"All he wanted to do was join his team in Kuwait. When I told him that he'd do a great job, his remarks were 'I'll do what it takes to get the job done.' I knew at that point I could depend on him. He fit the mold for a Special Forces non-commissioned officer. Truly an outstanding soldier," says LTC Jay Glover, 1st Battalion Commander.

Westberg, a native of Mankato Minn., is survived by his wife and two children who live in Hope Mills.
