DURHAM — In the David and Goliath battle of bookstores, a small Durham book business says it has fallen victim to the large chains.

After 14 years at the helm of The Little Professor Book Center, owner Tom Culbreth will close the store in two weeks.

With a Barnes and Noble planned only a half-mile away at the new Southpoint Mall and a Borders bookstore opening in Chapel Hill, Culbreth says he can no longer compete.

Longtime customers say that they will miss Culbreth's personal touch. Culbreth feels the same way about them.

"It's amazing," he said. "I'm going to miss it."

He says he is not sure what he will do once the store closes, but he is exploring a number of options.
