Closings, Clean-Up Mark Holiday

RALEIGH — We wanted and needed rain, and now we certainly have it. For some, whose homes, businesses or cars went under water over the past few days, it will be a Labor Day marked by cleaning up. For everyone, the holiday means a change of schedule as stores and government agencies take the day off.

Schools are closed, as are post offices; state, city and county offices; banks; and ABC stores.

In Durham and Johnston Counties, museums will be open. Museums are closed in Orange and Wake Counties.

Parks are closed in Orange County, open in Durham, Johnston and Wake.

Libraries are closed in the four counties.

Landfills are closed in Durham, open in Johnston, Orange and Wake.

The State Farmers' Market is open in Raleigh.

Garbage and trash pickup has been canceled for Monday.

Many stores across the Triangle are trumpeting Labor Day sales, and, given that the day is so soggy, that may be a great way to pass the day. Other options that suit the day and the weather include curling up with a book or watching a rented video.

If the rain puts a damper on your planned outdoor barbecue, remember not to grill indoors. The fumes can be dangerous, and the flames can set your house on fire. It's also inadvisable to grill in a garage.

Order in a pizza; it's safer.
