RALEIGH — North Carolina recorded one of the nation's largest drops in number of adults on parole.
According to U.S. Justice Department statistics, there are more than 5700 parolees in North Carolina -- a drop of nearly 30 percent from this time last year.
Nationally, the number of people on parole reached 4 million for the first time ever, a slight increase.
While many states are releasing inmates early, others like North Carolina have toughened their laws to keep offenders in prison longer.
