At 107, She's Seen It All

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — One Raleigh woman has seen all the rains, heat and droughts of the last century. During her lifetime she has seen horses and carriages supplanted by cars and airplanes, and men land on the moon and explore Mars.

That's because she was born 107 years ago -- in 1892.

When Emma Crawford was born, Benjamin Harrison was in the White House. Many of our most common gadgets and tools had not yet been invented -- the typewriter, paper clip, and refrigerator among them. She was 4 when Utah became a state, 14 when Oklahoma was admitted to the union -- and in 1912 she could welcome Arizona and New Mexico to the USA.

Mrs. Crawford has truly seen it all. And Saturday she celebrated her latest birthday surrounded by close friends, flowers and stacks of birthday cards.

Friends say she is still active and alert and has an amazing sense of humor.
