Posted Updated

DURHAM — Ever since Mia Hamm and her teammates won theWorld Cup, she has been traveling around promoting women's soccer and appearing on national TV.

Monday, the first lady of soccer was in Chapel Hill, and local fans could not have been more excited.

The pit in front of the Bull's Head Bookstore on theUNC campuswas filled with at least 1,000 soccer fans eager to get an autographed copy of Hamm's new book "Go for the Goal."

The star of the Women's World Cup team says her book carries a message for young players.

"We do a lot of the same things they do in practice," Hamm said. "We have a lot of the same fears that they have when they step on the field, a lot of the same insecurities, and that we are a lot more alike than we are different."

Hamm holds the world record for goals and has endorsement deals from Pepsi to Pert shampoo, but she takes her role as a role model very seriously.

"That responsibility comes with birth," she said. "I didn't become a role model just because I was on a Gatorade commercial or on a Nike commercial, I became a role model because I can influence someone's life."

"I think she is really cool because she is one of my heroes," says soccer player Tracy Stone. "I look up to her."

"I am so happy that my daughter has somebody to look up to like Mia Hamm," says soccer mom Beth Riley, "instead of some drugged-out rocker, or somebody who doesn't have the morals and the goals that this woman has."

Even though Riley said she did not like her daughter worshiping rockers, Hamm definitely receive rock-star treatment in Chapel Hill.
