DMV Not Junk Mail Conduit

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — If you get junk mail, it won't be the Division of Motor Vehicles' fault any more.

A new law prevents the DMV from selling your personal information to mass mailing companies -- unless you say they can.

This reverses a 1997 law that required drivers to fill out privacy forms if they didn't want their personal information sold.

Approximately 300,000 of the state's six million vehicle owners filed the form before the program was put on hold.

Now, if you want to get mass mailings, you'll have to send a request to the DMV.
