Posted Updated

CARRBORO — Just before 1 p.m. Saturday, the distress call came from theUniversity of North Carolina'sHorace Williams Airport. Rescue crews arrived to find a single-engine Cessna had crashed in the woods, west of the runway. The crash site is about 200 yards from Seawell School Road, and reachable only by footpath.

"If you go to the plane and look up, there is almost no tree damage," says Barry McLamb, captain of the Chapel Hill Fire Department. "Apparently, he came pretty much straight down."

Within a few minutes, rescuers pulled the pilot from the crumpled wreckage. He was identified as Roderick M. Farb, 53, of Tom Pope Loop in Cedar Grove.

He was reported in good condition Sunday night atUNC Hospitals.

"It petrifies me," said Julie Bauers, who lives in the North Haven neighborhood, next to the Horace Williams runway. She says she and her neighbors are concerned about the number of airplanes flying in and out of the small airport.

"We were originally told when we moved in here, that the only traffic that moves in and out of this airport was related to UNC and Duke transplant operations," says Bauers, "that's not the case at all."

Police report that the plane involved in the crash belongs to theChapel Hill Flying Club.

This is the third crash at the airport in the past year and a half. TheFAAsays they have no idea what caused it; they are just beginning their investigation.
