Road Still Closed After Train and Tractor Trailer Collide Near Siler City

SILER CITY — Hamp Stone Road in Siler Cityis still closed after a freight train hit the trailer part of a tractor trailer Wednesday morning, derailing several of the trian's cars.

Officials with theChatham County Sheriff's Departmentsay the accident happened around 11 a.m. at Old 421 and Hamp Stone Road.

The driver of the logging truck, Ira Gainey Jr. of Sanford, reportedly saw the train coming, but did not hear its whistle. Gainey says he tried to speed up, but the train struck the trailer of his truck, separating it from the cab.

The train then dragged the trailer of the truck several feet and eventually caused three engines and two boxcars to derail. Gainey was transported to Chatham Hospital in Siler City where he was treated for a head laceration, then released in good condition.

Gainey has been charged with failure to yield at a railroad crossing.

Authorties say the road will be shut down for at least another 24 hours while clean-up crews continue to clear the wreckage.
