Family and friends arrived at Triton High's commencement exercises the traditional way. Allison Core's dad, Charles, though, attended his daughter's graduation while in a hospital bed 60 miles away. A video conference hookup made it possible.
"I'm really proud to be a part of it tonight," he said. "Circumstances prevented me from being there, but this gives me the same thing as being live, almost."
For this father and daughter, sharing in each other's lives is a tradition. "This has been 18 years of my life and it's because of him that I'm going to be walking across that stage this evening," Allison says.
"He's always got a smile on his face no matter what. I think he's just the greatest person that I've ever met and I hope that I inherit these qualities over the next years," Allison says of her father.
And it's not just Allison who values her dad; this school community thinks highly of him, and the relationship he shares with his daughter.
"I've had Allison ever since middle school and he has been right there, from the time she won the spelling bee for Harnett County to right now, to graduation tonight," says principal Dan Honeycutt.
After receiving her diploma, Allison spoke via teleconference to her father again, reaffirming a bond cancer cannot break.
