Military Spouse Starts Letter Writing Campaign

Summer Krook started a letter writing campaign to let service members half way around the world, know they are appreciated and not forgotten.

"It does a lot for them. It keeps them connected at home," Krook said. "It reminds them that regardless of people's political feelings of what's going on over there, they always have our support no matter what they do."

Krook's husband is not deployed, but knows the call could come at anytime.

To boost the letter writing campaign, Krook and a friend sent flyers to other military installations, soldiers hometowns, their hometowns, and to lawmakers.

It only takes a few minutes to write a letter, and the cost is just a 33 cent stamp. Because the commitment is so small, Krook wants as many people as possible to write and mail one letter a week.

At Devers Elementary School, a group of third graders write to soldiers often.

"I want them to know about me, and I want to know about them," says third grader Eddie Moore.

"I think it will help them not be sad that they are away from their families," says third grader Brittany Dover.

The soldiers are responding through the American Red Cross. They want the letters to keep coming and have some requests. They would like things including, plain paper, pens, and baby wipes.

Krook is now trying to set up drop off boxes on post. The Red Cross will also accept items.

Volunteers with the Red Cross will distribute the letters.
