RALEIGH, N.C. — Police are enforcing the speed limit in downtown Raleigh after receiving an increased number of complaints about speeding and an excessive amount of collisions near the new convention center construction zone.
Sixteen police motorcycle units are patrolling the downtown area where Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard runs into Western Boulevard, right before South Saunders Street.
Many motorists pulled over for speeding say they do not realize that the speed limit, which decreases from 45 mph to 35 mph to 25 mph, changes on the stretch of road leading into downtown.
Police say they do not yet have statistics for the number of people cited for speeding violations, but officers tell WRAL that they have clocked vehicles going into downtown with speeds up to 98 mph.
