Harnett County sheriff's investigators arrested James Arthur Judd, 20, of Lillington, on Saturday and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with the intent to kill. Warrants were also issued for Milton Terrell "Tookie" Matthews, 20.
Authorities say Patterson, a teacher at South Harnett School, was lying in bed on the evening of Oct. 11 when several shots were fired into her residence at
2776 McLean Chapel Church Road
.
One bullet hit Patterson in her upper body and left her paralyzed from the waist down.
"I had felt my legs go numb. Then, I felt an extra coldness in my hand," Patterson said.
Sheriff's deputies say Judd and Matthews are trying to get even with someone from a shooting that occurred a few days earlier in the Shawtown community outside Lillington. Investigators said the two suspects were there, as well as Patterson's son.
Detectives do not think Patterson's son was involved in the shooting and are not sure whether he was the intended target. They do say, however, they are confident Patterson was not the target
"It's amazing I'm sitting here, a victim of something I knew nothing about."
