Local Prayers Offered for Rwandan Peace

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Triangle residents gathered Sunday to pray for peace in Rwanda and the African Great Lakes region.

This is the 5th such commemoration of the war in Rwanda that began in October 1990 and did not end until April 6, 1994. Estimates put the toll at 800,000 killed and hundreds of thousands of people displaced as refugees.

The prayers and songs for Rwanda were offered at the Church of the Holy Cross on North Boylan Avenue.

Pete Leary, a country songwriter and singer who lives in Raleigh, sang at a reception that followed the church ceremony.

The local Rwandese community has grown from fewer than five people in 1992 to approximately 50 today.
