Flurries Fall Across Triangle

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Snow flurries held off in the Raleigh area for the morning commute, but by mid-morning the flakes were swirling through the air. Before the day is done, however, the eastern edge of the Piedmont should have a virtual smorgasbord of weather.

In the Triangle area, Fishel says it will probably start out as snow then sleet then freezing rain before eventually turning into rain.

Heading into the afternoon, areas south and east of Raleigh will mainly see rain, although it could start as some snow or sleet.

In areas north and west of the Triangle, Fishel says it is possible that the temperature could stay at or below freezing all day Tuesday causing significant accumulation.

But the storm will not stay long. It is expected to move out of the area by the end of the day.

Tune in at noon for the latest updates from theWRAL-TV5 WeatherCenter. For the North Carolina mountains, there will be no surprise -- snow is on the way. Mountain areas can expect as much as four inches by Tuesday.

An area of low pressure that developed over the south central U.S. reached the mountains late Monday night and continued its way east Tuesday.

Awinter weather advisoryis in effect for the Piedmont and western sandhills.

People living in or traveling through northwest sections of the state need to monitor the situation. They should check withNOAAweather radio or local media for the latest information.

Today's weather is a visual reminder that, despite many spring-flowering trees in bloom, and daffodils and hyacinths brightening the scene, winter is still with us.
