Durham Police Search for Double Shooting Suspect

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Durham police continue to search for the suspect in a double shooting that left two lawyers injured.

One of the victims was treated and released. The other is at Durham Regional Hospital in satisfactory condition.

The shootings happened about 7 p.m. Wednesday outside a health clinic on Roxboro Road. Investigators say the suspect is a teenager, and that he escaped on a red BMX bicycle.

According to police, the two attorneys went to the clinic to discuss a case with a doctor. When they were leaving the building, the suspect approached them on the bicycle with a large-caliber handgun.

One of the lawyers works almost exclusively with juvenile clients. He identified the gunman as 14-to-15 years old.

"What is a 15-year-old kid out here on a bicycle doing with a .45," Durham Police Cpl. Fran Borden said. "I mean there must be some parents around here that really need to get a grip."

Police say the young suspect told the two men they had five seconds to give up their money. He then fired shots as they reached for their wallets.

"One attorney was struck in the lower right abdomen area," Borden said Wednesday night. "The second attorney received a gunshot to the forearm. We think the bullet passed through him."

Police say the number of crimes committed by juveniles in Durham has actually been on the decline for the past five years.
