They and another couple were in a private plane that crashed near the town of Summerfield.
The plane carrying Ruth Hodson and her husband, Ronald, a zoology professor and head of the Sea Grant Program at NC State University, crashed into a house on Saturday. The house was part of a Thoroughbred horse farm.
Mrs. Hodson died yesterday.
The other woman on board also died. Sharon Monturiol, of Florida, was pronounced dead after the crash. The pilot and owner of the plane, Bryant Monturiol, is also in critical condition.
No one on the ground was hurt.
Authorities say the pilot, who was critically injured, was trying to land at a private airstrip a few hundred yards away. Police say at least one of the two engines on the Aero Commander sputtered before it crashed.
A Sea Grant spokeswoman says the Hodsons were in Florida for a conference.
