The boys of summer who play for the Mudcats in Zebulon are wondering if they'll be able to maintain the tradition. The AA team is caught in the middle of a different kind of game -- politics. Its stadium needs renovating, but Raleigh City Council says it will okay funds for renovation only if Wake County Commissioners cancel plans for a new 9-1-1 center.
"Of course, I was very disappointed," says Wake County Commissioner Chairman John Converse. "I guess the fact that there was linkage, there seemed to be a little bit if commission bashing going on there. We're not going to get into that. We feel like the Mudcat issue is an issue that we need to deal with, and we don't need to be linking it with anything else."
Commissioners say they will simply try to find another way to come up with the money needed for the stadium, without getting involved in a political tug-of-war.
