The tower lighting ceremony has been going on for about 40 years. The ceremony is one wayCapitol Broadcasting Companysays "Happy Holidays" to the community.
If you are new to the area or have never seen the tower at Christmas, you should come down Western Blvd. in Raleigh sometime during the holiday season to check it out.
The bell choir from Farmington Woods Elementary School in Cary provided us with some music for the lighting ceremony.
"They're great children. They have wonderful parents, and we have a great school at Farmington Woods in Cary," said choir director Ann LeGarde. "The choir has been in existence since 1985. This group has played a little over a year."
The music stopped and the kids counted down with Greg Fishel.
The idea of putting lights on the tower came from A.J. Fletcher, founder of Capitol Broadcasting Company.
There are 2,100 colored lights on the tower to keep it glowing throughout the holiday season. Three five foot stars adorn the top.
