State Bureau of Investigation agents spent hours inside the first floor office at Harrelson Hall. The office of math professor Dana May Latch. School officials have distributed crime alert flyers on campus to warn others of the possible danger.
Investigators say she was severely beaten in her office sometime between 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday. People who know the victim and those who work in Harrelson say they're most worried about a stranger.
"Any time it's random it scares all of us," said Janice Mitchell, math department secretary. "I've alerted my staff and all my faculty with an email to tell them if the come into the building, please be safe."
The head of the math department says Dana May Latch is a good person and a good teacher.
"She [is] a very thoughtful person," said Dr. Bob Martin, head of the math department. "And whenever she traveled, she usually brought back stuff for the secretaries. She always made a point to make sure that students got every opportunity to do well in her courses."
Sources close to the investigation told WRAL-TV5'sMark Robertsthat someone saw a possible suspect leaving Harrelson Hall at around the time of the attack Tuesday night. Police are working on that lead, trying to obtain a description of a possible suspect.
As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, police knew of know suspect and no motive.
