It's Your Tax or Your Property in Cumberland County

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — The Tax Administrator in Cumberland County is becoming more aggressive in collecting property taxes thanks to modern technology. In the past, the office allowed more time before penalizing taxpayers for missing the Jan. 5 deadline. Not this year.

Cumberland County is trying to decrease its current delinquency rate of four percent. A new computer system will allow the county to start putting attachments on bank accounts, and garnishments on wages, within a week of the deadline. Within 30 days, your home or business could be foreclosed.

The county is hoping these measures will bring its collection rate in line with other large municipalities, like Wake County.

Cumberland County Tax Administrator Garrett Alexander explains the gap. "They have for years had the type of technology that we've just implemented so that they could be very aggressive very early in the year," Alexander says. "And now that we have that type of technology and capability, we want to be as aggressive and begin as early as we can."

To avoid problems, mail in your property tax payment with a postmark prior to the Jan. 5 deadline. And if you do have to pay in person, bring cash instead of a check so you can go to the front of the line.
