Carolina Ballet Promises A Very Special Christmas

RALEIGH — If you're looking for something fun to do while family and friends are in town for the holidays, follow Tracy Wilson who is Out & About with a very special idea.

Look out Nutcracker Suite -- there'?s a new ballet in town for the holidays! The Carolina Ballet will be performing the world premiere of Handel'?s Messiah later this week.

Artistic Director Robert Weiss created the ballet based on the holiday favorite.

Handel's Messiah tells the story of man'?s quest for a higher understanding and a true spirituality. Humans search for form, perfection and beauty, just as dancers do with ballet.?

This holiday ballet will be multi-dimensional, combining dance with song and art. The National Opera Company, Raleigh Oratorio Society, the Opera Company of North Carolina and The North Carolina Symphony will collaborate on the performance.

paintings from the Renaissance and middle ages depicting the birth of Christ will also be featured, as the dancers bring them to life.

As a special treat, the Sugar Plum Fairy will host the Kingdom of Sweets party after the matinee shows. The audience will be treated to a variety of complimentary holiday sweets.

Performances will be at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, located at 2 E. South Street, in downtown Raleigh. There are performances Saturday, December 26 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, December 27 at 3 p.m.

Matinee tickets range from $5-$15 and tickets to the evening performance range from $10-$20.

Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster locations, Kroger, Hecht'?s, or Schoolkids Records.

Some members of the WRAL family will be on hand for the world premiere of Messiah. Debra Morgan, Pam Saulsby, Greg Fishel, Jim Payne and Tom Suiter are scheduled to lead the audience in Christmas carols before the ballet.
