FAYETTEVILLE — After searching from late Saturday evening, rescue teams on Sunday afternoon recovered the bodies of two men who drowned in the Cape Fear River.

Divers pulled the bodies of Stephen Dew and James Grillancy from the river. The men had been on board a small boat with two other men when the craft sank. The two companions were able to swim ashore, but Dew and Grillancy did not make it.

"The boat capsized and they had a lot of clothing on, plus some battery packs with lights. With all the extra weight they just didn't make it ashore," said Maj. Ray Davis of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department.

Davis said he does not believe any of the men was wearing life vests.

The two men who made it to shore were not injured in the accident.
