Authorities Identify Bones Found in Rocky Mount Pond

Posted Updated

ROCKY MOUNT — An eerie mystery in Rocky Mount has been unraveled. A skull turned up in a pond, then more bones were found scattered nearby. Now, a week later, the whole, horrible story is a lot clearer.

Investigators now have a name and a face to put to those remains. They believe the victim is a Halifax County woman who had been missing for three months.

Police say it was a brutal murder. The victim's body was cut into pieces, and part of it was dropped in a Rocky Mount pond.

Viola Brinkly, 29, had been missing three months when Rocky Mount police pulled her skull and bones from a pond.

Now, her mother and sister hope the man they believe murdered Brinkly comes forward.

Police believe Viola Brinkly was killed in or near her Enfield home where she and her husband lived.

After her husband reported her missing, police found luggage filled with her belongings in a dumpster near the Wilson hotel where her husband worked along Highway 301.

Last Monday, her bones were found in a pond along Highway 301 in Rocky Mount.

"It's some relief to know that we've located it and that we can go the next step in trying to figure out exactly what happened," said Halifax County Sheriff Jeff Frazier.

Frazier also says they found Brinkly's shoes in the pond. Other than that, police are still looking for the rest of the body. They are also looking for more evidence before they can make an arrest.
