Cary Man Still Missing, Mystery Deepens

Lt. Steve Lee, of the Cary Police, explains. "Early one morning in March, one of our officers pulled up to the Parkway Convenience Store and noticed all the lights on and no one inside."

Some cash and a video surveillance tape were missing and so was the owner, Larry Jones, who opened the place every day.

At first, investigators thought they had a robbery and kidnapping case on their hands. But, after four days, it began to look like Jones may have taken off on his own and simply disappeared.

"We found out Larry had packed a lot of clothes," Lee says. "All his fishing tackle, his favorite rod and reel, was missing from the house. It kind of gave us the indication 'here's a man that maybe planned this.'"

Seven months have passed without a sign of Jones, and Lee says the disappearance has been really tough on Jones' family.

Jones' wife would not talk to WRAL on camera, but told us she's convinced her husband of 23 years is still alive.

Detectives say the avid fisherman could be at a favorite vacation spot: Lake Ocachobee, Florida. "He could get a job as a fishing guide because there's thousands of people down there and there's hundreds of fish camps. People can move around and kind of get lost."

Usually police can track a person through their credit cards, but Jones didn't have one. Instead, Cary Police are relying on tips from the public.

And even though it looks like Jones just took off, Lee says authorities have not ruled out foul play.
