Death of Newborn Still Haunts Rocky Mount Investigators
Nearly three months after an infant was found murdered and left in the trash, police are still searching for the boy's mother. Rocky Mount police say it's a difficult case, but they hope the right tip will help find justice for the baby.
Posted — UpdatedROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Nearly three months after an infant was found murdered and left in trash, police are still searching for the boy's mother. Rocky Mount police say it's a difficult case, but they hope the right tip will help find justice for the baby.
“This was a very horrendous crime. This is something no one wishes on anyone,” said Rocky Mount Sgt. Carl Revis.
The 2-day-old infant boy was found in a grocery store dumpster in February. An autopsy showed the child was murdered. Police haven't said how, but say the child was likely killed somewhere else and dumped there.
“We're still checking up on leads,” Revis said. “They have taken us basically all over the state, but we still have not found the identity of the mother of the child.”
Police and the Department of Social Services helped to give the infant a proper burial. It has been an emotional case for all involved.
“Being a child, an infant, and this infant has not done anything to anyone, it's just very tragic,” Revis said.
Investigators said tips have nearly dried up, and they still are not sure if the mother is from Rocky Mount or even from North Carolina. Police are still waiting for test results on evidence sent to the State Bureau of Investigation lab.
“We in no way have stopped,” Revis said. “We're still following up on leads.”
There are still no leads in a similar case out of Duplin County, where a baby boy was found in a vacant home in February. Members of the community arranged a funeral for him. Investigators have chased down leads, but so far nothing has panned out.
