Wendell Williamson has been in a state mental hospital since he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. The former U.N.C. law student was accused of killing two people and wounding others as he stalked downtown Chapel Hill in 1995.
Williamson's attorney said in opening arguments today that evidence will show that Doctor Myron Liptzin failed to provide adequate mental health care.
A lawyer for the former U.N.C. campus psychiatrist says Williamson improved under Liptzin's care, even passing his law classes that semester. But after Liptzin retired, Williamson chose to quit taking medication to control his mental illness.
A jury of ten women and two men will decide the lawsuit in Hillsborough.
