CUMBERLAND, N.C. — A kayaker on the Cape Fear River was rescued Saturday morning after flipping out of his kayak and clinging to a tree.

The Cape Fear Fire Department got a call about the stranded kayaker about 9 a.m.

Swift water rescue teams from Chatham and Lee Counties had to make their way across the river, but the rapidly moving high water made the rescue more challenging.

“When the river is up that high, people just need to be cautious and pay attention to the river, with the water as swift as it is and how much rain we've had in the past,” said Cape Fear Fire spokesman Wayne Parsons.

Parson said the kayaker was shaken up but uninjured once rescue workers reached him. The rescue took about three hours.
