Storm Knocks Out Johnston EMS Phones, Computers

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — Severe weather knocked out the phones and computers at the Johnston County Emergency Medical Service, and only one of seven 911 lines remains open. If that line is busy, a second call can be re-routed into Benson.

The EMS operators are manually looking up addresses, and encourage people with emergencies to continue trying to call until they can get through. Emergency officials say residents can still count on help being on the way.

Technicians are working on the problem, but they do not know how long it will take. They hope to be able to get back online sometime tonight, but they say there's a chance service won't be completely restored until tomorrow.
