Police Nab Burglary Suspect When Goods Apparently Stolen from Him

Posted Updated

SELMA — It's a twisted kind of story, but it's true. It all started when Howard Ward of Raleigh, owner of Ward's Produce at the North Carolina Farmers Market, reported $150,000 in cash stolen from his home by a young man who was doing some work on Ward's house. Investigators say the suspected thief then spent about three days in Selma, partying with his friends.

It was some party. The suspect, Brandon Edward Vaughan of Louisburg, managed to blow as much as $30,000.

Then, in a bizarre twist, Vaughan became a victim himself. His car and some of the allegedly stolen cash were swiped. Vaughan reported the theft and, after being questioned by police, confessed to stealing the money in the first place. He also confessed to stealing money in Franklin County.

Police recovered $111,500.

Vaughan will turn 20 Tuesday. He is being held in Wake County Jail on a $150,000 cash bond.

Ward says he has learned his lesson. He told authorities he'll never have that kind of cash around again.
