Some parts of Lee County looked like disaster zones Thursday, after the storms. Those same places looked amazingly different Friday. Toppled trees had been chopped up and removed thanks to a group of Baptist Men volunteers.
Members of the group arrived in Lee County Thursday evening and worked until after dark, only to rise early and begin again Friday. The group's members take vacation time from their jobs to travel around the country assisting with disaster relief.
One group, consisting of men, women and teens from Raleigh, say it's just as important, if not more so, to offer help in communities closer to home.
"I think we should help at home first," said volunteer Mike Greene. "And once we get those things taken care of, then we can go. But we shouldn't leave things local undone before we [go elsewhere]."
A local Baptist church provided overnight lodging for the volunteers.
Members of a Lee County family who benefited from the assistance say they were overwhelmed with the generosity of the volunteers.
Another group of volunteers from the group were expected to arrive Friday afternoon.
