Tuesday night police set up a road block on St. James Church road where the accident happened. They hoped to find someone that travels the route frequently that may provide additional information.
Police found the body of 43-year-old Charles Sidney Willis after a passing motorist phoned it in shortly after midnight. Officers went door to door around 3:00 a.m. asking residents if they saw or heard anything. However, most people were sleeping and were not able to help police with many details.
Raleigh Police Officer G.S. Marley said that the suspected vehicle is a brown 1984-87 Buick Regal that should have heavy fender damage on the right side.
Roses mark the site where Willis lost his life late Monday night. Willis was riding his bike home from work when he was struck and killed, just a few feet from his driveway.
"It's scary, although my children don't play in the front yard," resident Brenda Farlow said. "The cars just go too fast."
Farlow lives across the street from the scene of the accident, and fears for the safety of her two young children. She has complained to police before about the busy road.
The speed limit is 35 miles per hour, but residents say that most people drive much faster. The road is often used as a shortcut to avoid local construction.
"This road is mainly used as a cut through," resident Tim Farlow said. "So someone had to have seen something."
Raleigh police believe that the hit-and-run occurred between 10 p.m. and midnight.
