Road crews were out Friday night with words no motorist likes to hear-- there's road work ahead. Two lanes are closed. Be prepared to stop. Expect delays.
The signs went up, and it was time to roll out the barrels. It's not a barrel of fun for people sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. A one-mile stretch of Capital Blvd. was reduced to one lane between Spring Forest Rd. and Old Wake Forest Rd. so that crews could pave the section that is being widened.
Right now, it's two lanes in each direction. Eventually, it will become three. People who will be driving down Capital Blvd. over the weekend will likely have a difficult time seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
"I am coming from Cary," said motorist Sean Martin. "I have to get up to the WRAL Soccer Center for a soccer tournament. There's going to be a lot of traffic on Capital Blvd."
"It's going to be a mess if they shut it down," explained Angela Spinks, another motorist stuck in traffic. "It's already crowded. Traffic is already crowded. It's going to be worse if they shut another lane down."
The section of Capital Blvd. that's being reduced to one lane temporarily isn't the only part of the road that's a mess. The intersection at Highway-401 is still under construction. It's all supposed to be completed next summer."
Transportation officials say the lane they are working on this weekend will be closed until early Monday morning. Motorists are advised to take alternative routes or back roads if they know the way.
