CARY, N.C. — A 14-year-old in town for a girls basketball tournament died early Friday, police said.

Emergency crews were called to the Courtyard by Marriott off Airport Boulevard shortly after midnight when the girl experienced breathing difficulties, police said. She was transported to Rex Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The girl's mother told investigators that her daughter had no history of breathing problems, but police said there were no indications of foul play and they aren't treating the case as a suspicious death.

The teen's body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

The girl was in Cary to participate in the Deep South Classic, which has attracted close to 300 high school all-star teams from across the country to the Triangle this weekend.
