Vandals Smash Glass in Dozens of New Cars
It will take two weeks to repair the damage, the dealer says.
Posted — UpdatedFAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville car dealership faces two weeks of having cars repaired as glass and tail-light lenses are replaced in 49 new vehicles damaged by vandals.
Dan Dederick, general manager of Hendrick Chrysler Jeep on Raeford Road, said the attack came in the dark of Easter morning.
"You can see they hit it right here, like with a hammer,” Dederick said as he pointed to a windshield with a hole and shatter lines.
Police said the culprits cut through a chain-link fence and made their way into a back lot.
"I've been in the car business for 34 years, and I've never seen that kind of damage anywhere at any dealership," Dederick said.
Workers wrapped damaged cars in plastic that keeps rain from getting on the new interiors. The total cost of the damage is estimated at $70,000.
"It's a damage to everybody, and I'm hoping that maybe somebody will come forward and tell police who did it," Dederick said.
Also last weekend, vandals damaged more than a dozen mailboxes in a neighborhood near the dealership, police said, but it's not clear if the two cases are related.
