Cary Dunks Plans for Aquatics Center
The Cary Town Council voted Tuesday to drop plans for a regional competitive swim center, opting instead to meet with three design firms to study incorporating swimming facilities into a new community center planned for northern or western Cary.
Posted — UpdatedCouncil members said they changed course because they didn't expect to receive a required private sector match in time to get an aquatics center built and open by late 2009. They also said another pool is already being built in Cary.
The planned $23.8 million community center -- it includes a $4.3 million outdoor aquatics facility and a $6 million recreation component -- will offer one outdoor recreation pool with waterplay features, an indoor recreation pool and an indoor 25-yard, eight-lane pool.
“The community center option will work well in serving the needs and interests of Cary citizens,” Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Director Mary Henderson said in a statement. “We’re excited about continuing to move ahead with this new programming area.”
The town plans to use a combination of cash and general obligation bonds to pay for the community aquatics center, officials said.
Designers will initially focus on the town-owned North Cary and Hawes sites as prospective locations.
