Supermarket Helps Restock Rescue Mission

Embers from a wood-burning stove sparked a fire at a building the mission uses as a pantry early Monday, forcing officials to discard about three months worth of food.

The Willowdaile Harris Teeter donated enough cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, rice, beans, noodles, soups, canned tuna and salmon, jelly, pancake mix, grits, oatmeal and condiments to feed the mission's clients for a week.

Last year, the Durham Rescue Mission provided 168,147 meals to hungry and homeless people and gave out 2,450 bags of groceries to needy families.
