DURHAM, N.C. — A local Harris Teeter store on Tuesday donated a week's supply of canned and dried foods to the Durham Rescue Mission, which lost a cache of food in a fire a day earlier.

Embers from a wood-burning stove sparked a fire at a building the mission uses as a pantry early Monday, forcing officials to discard about three months worth of food.

The Willowdaile Harris Teeter donated enough cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, rice, beans, noodles, soups, canned tuna and salmon, jelly, pancake mix, grits, oatmeal and condiments to feed the mission's clients for a week.

Last year, the Durham Rescue Mission provided 168,147 meals to hungry and homeless people and gave out 2,450 bags of groceries to needy families.

Other donations to the mission can be dropped off at 1201 E Main St. in Durham. Monetary donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 11858, Durham, N.C. 27703 or made online at the Mission's Web site.
