It began with heartfelt prayers and held hands among church and community members. It ended in pumped-up heart rates and arms reaching high. The fifth annual "Gospel in the Park" celebration brought out dozens of people with faith and fitness on their minds.
The group was able to exercise body and spirit by doing something they like to call "gospel-cise," aerobics classes that move to the beat of gospel music. Others marched and played to the tune of the church music along the track.
"Oh, I just love it," said Phyllis Rollins, "exercising and getting out into the community."
Gospel in the Park" isn't at Chavis Park by accident. Organizers wanted to come here to bring some positive energy to a community that's seen it's share of trouble.
"When I first moved here seven years ago, this area was considered a bad area," said participant Cory Mayo. "Now at this point in time, I enjoy coming out here and working out."
Young Jonathan Rogers also enjoyed himself:
"It's real fun," Rogers explained. "It's a positive atmosphere, and I'm just having a good time."
"Gospel in the Park" will be held at Chavis Park every Monday evening through August. Participants can work out and pick up helpful health information. The event is sponsored by several area churches.
