Johnston County Pastor Attacked at Church

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — Rev. Dennis Pollock had a busy Sunday morning in front of him, so he arrived at his church quite early -- about 5:15. And when he opened the door, he got a nasty surprise.

Three white males attacked him, clubbing him in the stomach, head and legs. Pollock had walked into a robbery in progress.

During the course of the melee, Pollock was tossed into the church's empty baptismal pool.

Now recuperating at home, Pollock says he bears his attackers no ill will but would like to talk to them to see if he can help straighten out their lives.

"I'm not out for revenge, but I would like to talk to them," said Pollock. I'd like to encourage them to get their lives straightened out and let this be the end of it."

Pollock was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

He believes that the intruders were interested in stealing the church's electronic equipment, because he spotted a stack of such material that had been assembled near a door.

The church, Tee's Chapel Church, is about 6.5 miles east of Smithfield on Brogden Road.

The men have not been caught. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Mert Woodall at 919-989-5025.
