I-40 Traffic Takes New Turn Tonight

Posted Updated

CARY — For the next two nights, motorists on the Triangle's busiest road will find themselves taking a new turn.

The Harrison Avenue bridge over I-40 is undergoing expansion, and part of that work includes painting of the bridge.

To ensure no cars are damaged by wet paint, for tonight and tomorrow night, I-40 west traffic will be routed off I-40 at the exit, directed across the road, and brought back down the entrance ramp to pick up I-40 West again.

The traffic shift will begin gradually. One westbound lane will be closed at 8 p.m.; another will be closed at 10; and all three lanes will be shut down at midnight.

During that time, traffic will be routed over the detour.

I-40 West will be reopened each morning at 6.

Bridge work involving I-40 East at Harrison Avenue will cause a similar traffic pattern change on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
