Hunt Signs Order for Hispanic-Latino Advisory Council

RALEIGH — Much of the agriculture of our state is dependent upon migrant labor under a system some call modern day slavery. Advocates for farm workers announced a new campaign Friday called JAWS, which stands for Justice for Agricultural Workers.

The group cites abuses by those who recruit workers into this country and claim workers are then denied basic liberties while on the job.

The JAWS campaign includes an offer to help workers find a better situation.

" ... that must bring to agricultural workers, their families and communities the freedom of movement and thought needed to struggle for the same social and economic recognition enjoyed by the rest of the working class in North Carolina," said Wilfreda Rivera of the N.C. Farmworkers Project.

Friday afternoon, Governor Jim Hunt signed an executive order creating the Governor's Advisory Council on Hispanic-Latino Affairs to address the needs of seasonal workers.
