Rumors of Shooting Prompt Excuses for Students

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Rumors of a shooting similar to the one at a Jonesboro, Arkansas, school have led to absences at East Wake Middle School.

Authorities say students were hearing that a classmate would set off a fire alarm, leading to an evacuation of the school. When students got outside the school, a student would open fire.

School officials say the rumors are just that. They say interviews indicate a student suspected of plotting the shooting had no such intentions. However, some students have been suspended for spreading the rumor.

Four children and a teacher were shot and killed March 24th after they filed out of the Jonesboro, Arkansas school in response to what turned out to be a false fire alarm. Ten others were injured in the shooting.
