Raleigh Police Detonate Suspicious Device

Police received a call about a possible bomb around 8:30 a.m. They later confirmed it was a bomb, a homemade device.

The State Bureau of Investigation's "bomb robot" has been at the scene.

Sandra Cartwright told WRAL-TV5 News photographer Robert Meikle that she received a call at her home about a bomb. She says the caller said it was under her white Mazda, although she told Meikle she could not see it.

Approximately 15 homes near the 500 block of Pace Street were evacuated but now have been allowed back. Once the area was cleared, officials detonated the device, which damaged Cartwright's car somewhat but which didn't affect other cars parked nearby. The street is in the general area of the Historic Oakwood area.

Neighbors were left to wonder why such a thing occurred in their normally quiet neighborhood.

No one has been arrested in the incident, but both state and federal charges are possible.
