RALEIGH — Putting children into day care is a fact of life for many of today's families, but child care workers are overworked and underpaid. That could affect the quality of care they get.
A new study by a child care advocacy group says on average, day care workers earn $13,000 a year, an income that's barely above the poverty level.
The low income and high demands of the job cause a turnover rate of about 30 percent. Public funding for daycares has increased over the last 10 years, but salaries have stayed basically the same.
The nine year study questions whether child care can truly be improved unless efforts are made to recruit and keep a well qualified work force.
