The final appeal was just denied Wednesday, but people are already lining up outside the prison to protest the execution. The group began to gather in front of the prison Thursday morning, planning a prayer vigil.
Flowers was already serving a life sentence when he killed the fellow inmate. He has chosen to die by lethal injection, rather that submit to deadly gas, N.C.'s other current option. He was moved into a holding cell at about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Father Jude Siciliano is one of the protest organizers. He says the death penalty is not only wrong, as they see it, but is also practiced in a discriminatory manner.
About Flowers execution in particular, Siciliano says he wants to call attention to the fact that blacks are far more likely to be put to death.
The protesters are asking Governor Hunt to stay the execution. Other vigils are planned before the execution as well.
Officials say Flowers has asked that all appeals be stopped.
