Posted Updated

RALEIGH — A Raleigh man was one of the five people who were killed in a Navy helicopter crash in southern California on Friday night.

25-year-old Lt. Donald M. Hillegas of Raleigh was killed when the SH-60B Seahawk helicopter went down in the San Bernadino Mountains, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.

It was on a training mission from North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, when it went down Friday afternoon.

The chopper was assigned to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light-47.

A newspaper says that the chopper's pilot reported icy rotor blades before the crash.
