CARY, N.C. — A crime-plagued motel was shut down Thursday by federal and local authorities.

The Cary Efficiency Inn on Old Apex Road had been open for more than 50 years, but it has been the scene of scores of crimes in recent years.

From 1995 through 2006, 196 crimes were reported at the motel, including drug violations and assaults, Cary police said. The town's only murder last year also occurred there when a man was given a lethal combination of drugs, police said.

Cary police teamed up with the U.S. Attorney's Office to close the motel, forcing four families to move out, including the manager and her three children.

The U.S. Attorney's Office hasn't said why it is involved in the case. But a federal statute allows the government to seize chronic, crime-ridden properties.

It's unclear what authorities plan to do with the vacant property.
